The countdown is officially on! We are now T – 4 days away from boarding our Tokyo-bound flight with bicycles in tow. To say I’m excited is an understatement – this trip has been nearly 12 months in the making! For the wallet and also for the form-finding aboard Lulu.
So what does the itinerary look like and what will we be doing? We are in Japan for 16 days and for roughly 10 of these days we will be cycling! Some of the highlights include riding Mt Fuji (a 25km climb at an average of 6%…pray for me) and the “Day in Hell” Rapha pop up ride in Fukuoka that finishes just in time to watch the end of the Paris-Roubaix!
I’m apparently also being subjected to the torture of Japan’s best haunted house, some of the wildest roller coasters in the world and cherry blossoms.
The weather is currently sitting at a balmy 5 – 10 degrees celcius so naturally I panicked and bought the entire Rapha winter collection. I’m hoping that at least some of it will be transferable to a Brisbane winter. I fully intend to blog up some reviews about the winter gear so stay tuned for post-Japan delights.
For now, I’m just praying our bikes will arrive in one piece and the giant roll of bubble wrap we used protect our babies succeeds in its one job. If all else fails, travel insurance of the highest order to the rescue. I’ve never had to transport a bike anywhere before, but Tim assures me his lifelong experience in such matters will ensure I am fully informed in how much of a pain in the ass it is and prompt second thoughts about any other overseas biking adventures I had been contemplating. We shall see.
